Modern Endangered Archives Program (UCLA) Awards Grant For Southern African Transnational Cinema Archive

Zimmedia is engaged in a research partnership with the Pedagogic University of Maputo – Rector Jorge Ferrao and with Professor Martin Mhando Chairperson of the Zanzibar International Film Festival. We are cataloguing films made by filmmakers across the Southern African region which tell the forgotten stories of two decades of radical change in Southern Africa, beginning in the aftermath of the Mozambican and Angolan revolutions in 1975 and ending in a South Africa ruled by Mandela. We aim to conserve these films through digitisation and make our archives available to scholars internationally. We see this research into the liberation films of Southern Africa as an important contribution to the decolonisation of the archives and a significant contribution to African cinema scholarship.
